Sweepstakes leads are consumers who entered a prize promotion and, in doing so, proved two things worth paying for: they respond to offers, and their contact details are real enough that they expected to be reached. For direct response marketers, that combination is why this category has stayed in demand for decades.
List57 has brokered sweepstakes data since 1997. Below is what is available, how the file types differ, which selects you can apply, and what arrives when you order.
Mail-In and Online Entries Are Different Products
The single most important question when buying sweepstakes data is how the entry was captured. Both types are legitimate. They behave differently and they price differently.
| Handwritten / mail-in entries | Online entries | |
|---|---|---|
| How captured | Consumer wrote their details on a card or form and mailed it back | Consumer submitted a web form |
| What it proves | Physical mail responsiveness — they opened mail and acted on it | Online responsiveness and reachability by email |
| Data quality | Bot and bulk-fill entries are largely impossible | Depends heavily on the source’s form validation |
| Volume | Lower. Limited by how many people actually mailed something | Higher, and faster to accumulate |
| Cost per record | Higher | Lower |
| Best for | Direct mail campaigns, older demographics, premium offers | Email and multichannel programs, volume testing |
If your campaign is a mailed package, handwritten entries are usually worth the premium, because someone who already responded through the mail is the closest available proxy for someone who will respond to your mail. If you are running email or working at high volume, online entries make better economics.
Recency Drives Price and Performance
Recency matters more in this category than almost any other consumer file. A sweepstakes entrant is at their most reachable and most responsive shortly after they entered.
| Recency band | What to expect |
|---|---|
| 0–30 days | Strongest response, highest cost per record, limited quantity |
| 31–90 days | Still highly responsive. The usual starting point for a first test |
| 91–180 days | Good economics for scaling a proven offer |
| 180+ days | Lowest cost per record. Expect softer response and more address decay |
Test on fresh data and scale on whatever the test proves. Testing on aged records and concluding the category does not work is the most common and most expensive mistake buyers make here.
Selects You Can Apply
Availability varies by source file. We will tell you which selects exist on the specific file you are quoting rather than listing everything and sorting it out later.
| Category | Available selects |
|---|---|
| Geographic | State, county, city, ZIP code, ZIP radius, SCF, carrier route, metro area |
| Demographic | Age and age bands, gender, marital status, presence of children, household size |
| Financial and property | Household income, home ownership, dwelling type, length of residence |
| Entry behavior | Recency, entry frequency across promotions, entry method, promotion category |
| Buyer signals | Known mail order buyers, continuity or club members, catalog purchasers, charitable donors |
| Interest overlays | Health, collectibles, home and garden, puzzles and games, travel, electronics |
Every select you add narrows the universe and adds cost per thousand. Start with geography and recency, confirm the counts support your drop size, then layer from there.
What Arrives in Your File
The base record is name and postal address. Everything else is an append you add if your campaign needs it.
| Included | |
|---|---|
| Base record | First name, last name, street address, city, state, ZIP+4 |
| Phone append | Landline and/or mobile number where matched |
| Email append | Email address where matched and where the source file permits email use |
| Demographic append | Age, income, home ownership and other overlays you select |
Appends never match at 100%. We quote the actual match rate on your specific selection before you order, not after the file lands.
Delivery is a CSV or Excel file by email. No contracts and no minimums.
Which Channel You Are Buying For
Direct mail
This is the category’s home ground, particularly for handwritten files. Address hygiene matters more than anything else here — CASS and NCOA processing before the drop, not after the returns come back.
Telemarketing
Phone-appended records reach people faster than mail, but the compliance burden sits entirely with you. Any calling program needs current DNC scrubbing and needs to respect state rules, several of which are stricter than federal. We can scrub against the national registry before delivery. Making your calling program compliant is your counsel’s job, not ours.
Email works where the source file permits it and where your sending setup is sound. Deliverability depends far more on how you send — warmed domains, gradual volume, clean bounce handling — than on what you bought. Do not send a purchased file from your primary business domain.
Data Hygiene
Any file we deliver can be processed before it reaches you:
- CASS certification and DPV confirmation for address validity
- NCOA processing to catch movers
- Deduplication within the file and against your house list
- Suppression against your do-not-contact and existing customer lists
- Deceased and prison suppressions
- National DNC scrubbing for phone campaigns
Who Buys Sweepstakes Leads
- Direct mail marketers selling consumer products, collectibles, and continuity programs
- Publishers and continuity marketers building subscriber and club rosters
- Nonprofits and fundraisers prospecting for small-gift donors
- Insurance and financial marketers reaching older demographics through the mail
- Promotional and premium marketers whose offers depend on a prize or giveaway element
Working With a Sweepstakes Leads Broker
A broker’s value is knowing which files are worth your money and which are recycled. Reasonable things to ask for before you place an order, from us or anyone else:
- Counts by recency band, state, and any selects you are considering
- Documentation of how the entries were captured and what the original promotion’s rules permit
- Sample records for your own quality check
- Match rates on any append you are paying for
- Clear usage terms — single use, multi use, and what seeding is in place
- Suppression of your existing house list before delivery
A supplier who will not answer those questions in writing is telling you something useful.
Common Mistakes
- Buying on record count instead of recency. Ten thousand fresh records will beat a hundred thousand stale ones.
- Paying for appends you will not use. Buy the channel you actually have capacity to work.
- Skipping suppression. Mailing your own customers is money spent to annoy people who already bought from you.
- Mailing once and drawing conclusions. This audience rewards repetition. A single drop tells you very little.
- Assuming mail consent covers other channels. Email and phone have different consent standards. Check before you switch channels.
