An email marketing list is a file of consumer or business records selected against criteria you choose, delivered with email addresses appended so you can run a campaign against them. This page covers what is available, what arrives in the file, and how to buy it without wasting money.
List57 has brokered consumer and business data since 1997.
Consumer Email Lists and Business Email Lists
These are different products built from different sources, and mixing them up is the most common way a first campaign fails.
| Consumer email lists | Business email lists | |
|---|---|---|
| The record is | An individual at a home address | A named contact at a company |
| Selected by | Age, income, home ownership, lifestyle, purchase behavior | Industry, employee count, revenue, job title, seniority |
| Typical use | Retail, insurance, opportunity, health, subscription offers | B2B services, software, equipment, professional services |
| Volume available | Very high | Lower, and narrower once you apply title selects |
| Cost per record | Lower | Higher |
What Arrives in Your File
The base record is name and postal address. Email is an append, which means it matches on a percentage of records rather than all of them.
| Included | |
|---|---|
| Base record | First name, last name, street address, city, state, ZIP+4 |
| Email append | Email address where matched |
| Phone append | Landline or mobile number where matched |
| Selects applied | Whatever demographic or firmographic criteria you chose |
We quote the actual match rate on your specific selection before you order, not after the file arrives. Delivery is a CSV or Excel file by email, with no contracts and no minimums.
Selects You Can Apply
| Category | Available selects |
|---|---|
| Geographic | State, county, city, ZIP code, ZIP radius, metro area |
| Consumer demographic | Age, gender, marital status, presence of children, household size |
| Consumer financial | Household income, home ownership, dwelling type, length of residence |
| Consumer behavior | Mail order buyers, catalog purchasers, donors, subscription buyers |
| Business firmographic | Industry code, employee count, annual revenue, years in business |
| Business contact | Job title, seniority, department, decision-maker role |
| Contactability | Records with a deliverable email, records with a phone number |
Every select narrows the universe and adds cost per thousand. Start with geography and one or two behavioral selects, confirm the counts support your send size, then layer from there.
What Purchased Email Data Will and Will Not Do
Worth being direct about this, because unrealistic expectations cause most of the disappointment in this category.
It will put your offer in front of people who match a profile you defined, at a cost per contact far below most paid channels, and let you test an offer at volume quickly.
It will not perform like your house list. People on a purchased file did not ask to hear from you specifically. Open rates run lower and complaint rates run higher. Plan your economics around that from the start rather than being surprised by it.
Sending Without Damaging Your Domain
This matters more than which file you buy. The most common expensive mistake is sending a large purchased file from a primary business domain.
- Send from a separate domain, not the one carrying your transactional and house mail
- Warm the sending domain gradually before any volume send
- Start with a small batch and watch bounce and complaint rates before scaling
- Remove hard bounces immediately and permanently
- Honor unsubscribes on the first request, across every list you own
- Keep your offer and sender name consistent so recipients recognize you
CAN-SPAM sets the federal floor in the United States and several states add their own requirements. Compliance for your sending program is your responsibility, and it is worth having someone competent look at it before your first large send.
Data Hygiene
- Address standardization and correction
- NCOA processing to catch movers
- Deduplication within the file and against your existing house list
- Suppression against your do-not-contact and current customer lists
- National DNC scrubbing if you are also calling
Common Mistakes
- Buying on record count instead of fit. A tightly selected small file beats a large loose one on every metric that matters.
- Paying for an email append you never use. Buy the channel you have capacity to work.
- Sending everything at once. Test small, read the bounce and complaint data, then scale.
- Skipping suppression. Emailing people who already asked you to stop is both wasteful and a liability.
- Judging on one send. A single campaign tells you very little about a file’s real performance.
How to Order
- Tell us who you are trying to reach, the geography, and roughly how many records you need.
- We pull counts and confirm which selects and appends are available.
- You get a quote the same day, with the email match rate stated up front.
- The file is processed and delivered in CSV or Excel.
Request Counts and Pricing
Counts and pricing depend on whether you need consumer or business data, the selects you apply, and the email match rate on your selection. Tell us your target and we will pull counts and quote the same day.
